“A colander is a bowl-shaped utensil with holes all over it, usually made of metal, plastic, or ceramic, and is typically used to drain large quantities of food, such as pasta, vegetables, or fruits,” he says. “On the other hand, a strainer is a smaller utensil that usually has a finer mesh than a colander and is used to strain smaller items, such as grains, or to remove impurities from liquids like a syrup.”

When it comes to pasta, Jones says that a colander with a sturdy base and plenty of space will be your best bet since it will allow the pasta to drain quickly and evenly without getting stuck in the colander. The best pasta colanders will also have drainage holes at the base so your pasta isn’t sitting in water.

While the best colander material may depend on your preference and how often you will use it, Jones says that there are pros and cons for each. If you want durability, stainless steel colanders are the best option, but if you want something lightweight that you can throw in the dishwasher, a plastic or silicone colander will work best.
